Farming by Satellite Contest: Winners have been selected

The goals of the renowned Farming by Satellite competition include supporting the modernization of agriculture in Europe and Africa, as well as promoting the use of sustainable and innovative technologies. Sponsored by Bayer Division Crop Science and the agricultural machine manufacturer CLAAS, the contest aims to enhance satellite technology in order to improve agriculture as a whole and reduce the environmental impact. In its third year, 85 participants (teams and individuals under the age of 32) from 21 countries applied for prizes totaling €13,000.
1st place (€5,000): Team ISA Lille from France, for using satellite imagery to optimize plant cover properties.

2nd place (€3,000): Team TTT Solutions from the Czech Republic, for a crop-type detection and evaluation system.

3rd place (€1,000): Ambrogio Zanzi from Italy, for a new forecasting system for rice production.

Special Africa Prize (€4,000): Team Shamballite from Kenya for a mobile- and satellite- based farm information system.
Initiated by the European GNSS Agency (GSA) – responsible for European satellite navigation activities – and the European Environmental Agency (EEA), which provides independent information on the environment for decision-makers and the public, Farming by Satellite encourages European and African students and young people to submit case studies of trials, new ideas, and innovations, particularly those relying upon the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS), the forthcoming GALILEO system and COPERNICUS (the European Earth Observation program). The winners were selected by an independent panel of judges, consisting of Reinhard Blasi, Marie Menard, and Joaquin Reyes (GSA); Hans Dufourmont (EEA); Koji Fukuhara (Bayer Division Crop Science); Christian Radons (CLAAS); and Andrew Speedy (external consultant). Their decision was based on the relevance, feasibility, innovation, and market potential of the projects submitted. Read more about it at
